We are pleased to share that Google has rolled out a new type of participant account for research studies. These accounts internally utilize GMail demo accounts, and they offer a solution for studies that found it a challenge to require the use of a personal Google account for each participant using a Fitbit device. This new offering is a direct result of feedback by the research community and reinforces Google’s commitment to supporting researchers using Fitbit wearables in their studies.
Demo accounts are de-identified Google profiles designed for research. They are available now, and operate a bit differently than standard accounts. Below are some tips for getting started with Google demo accounts. More information can be found on our Knowledge Base, as well.
Know how long you need the accounts to last
Demo accounts expire after six months. However, Fitbit’s support team will automatically extend accounts in six-month increments for the lifetime of the study, with an additional month added to allow for data download. And factor in any additional time you might need as a result of potential study delays.
Application requirements
To use these accounts, you’ll need to complete a research application with Google. This application also requires you:
- have either an IRB approval or waiver
- provide a copy of that approval or waiver
Approval Timeline
Demo accounts take about 5-7 business days for Fitbit’s support team to approve, so you’ll want to account for this period of time before enrolling participants. When your accounts are ready, you’ll receive a secure link to a spreadsheet containing the username and passwords for the accounts.
